Communication Skills for Coaching
The basic principles of communication are the same for any endeavor – but in a focused exchange like coaching, they are under the microscope. Your ability to empathize, to create rapport and trust, your skill with questions, the skill with which you can get the person to 'go inside' and respond fully, the degree to which you can perceive the physical responses compared to the verbal in the answers all make the difference in a coaching session.
When you work to improve your communication skills you'll see a gain in just about every area of life, personal and professional, as well as coaching.
It's one thing to have a good questioning technique, but what you do with the answer is just as important. There is a technique called Active Listening. It was made popular in the 1970s and 80s by Dr Thomas Gordon. If you're lucky, you will know what it feels like when you have been truly and completely heard. Correct listening can speed the act of coaching, sometimes fixes things all by itself, and can even be a tool for influence. We learn to use the 'three levels of listening for results' on this module.
Motivation, Engagement and Purpose
Answer two questions completely honestly:
1. What fascinates you?
2. What do you LOVE to do?
You'll be happy to discuss, engage, help someone understand, improve, devote time and attention to, and even read junk mail on whatever you answered.Getting people to properly connect with their own goals is a major skill that starts the coaching process. The degree to which people recognize and incorporate their own goals in the business context – and have some say in their activation – decides the strength of their motivation, engagement and purpose. This is a key module in the coach training.
The Art of Feedback
Of all the ways of analyzing the subject of Feedback, think of it like this:
Who takes a second sip of boiling hot coffee?
Despite the fact that we are organisms who rely on feedback for survival, we still have trouble seeing or hearing our 'unfavorable' characteristics or behaviors that hinder our performance, particularly in the workplace.
The module covers advanced techniques that help you to appraise without resistance. You become able to provide the right information in the right way to help the person close the gap between desired and current performance.
Personality and Team Play
This module gives you a practical, jargon-free and entertaining insight into Jung's Theory of Personality. It explores the best ways to assess the strengths, weaknesses and idiosyncrasies of each of the personality traits of your colleagues and team members. And your own. Your ability to connect with personalities of all types, to adapt, to influence, and to get the best response from your colleagues, both as a coach and as a manager, is the aim of this module.
Personal SWOT Analysis
We agree with the great Peter Drucker – an individual can only perform from strength. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't pay attention to, or attempt to correct a characteristic that may prevent the full use of your strengths. But the focus is how to identify, use and focus on your key strengths, both as a coach and as a manager. An on-line evaluator (a questionnaire that takes about 20 minutes) provides the basis for your own private report. The report gives you insights into your own key performance strengths, weaknesses, blind spots and value to the team and what you need to do to get the very best out of yourself. You get help to create your action plan from the analysis of your unique 'Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats'.
The Manager As Coach
You'll explore the full use of this facilitative style of management as a leading-edge people development skill.
The end product is a manager who knows how and when to use a coaching style to raise individual and team performance, engagement and motivation. Unlike counseling, performance coaching is 'future oriented' and asks what can be done with the resources to hand. It gets people to dig deeply into their strengths. What can they do right now to gain the absolute best outcome? Open programmes last two days and in-house modules can be tailored in length and complexity to suit the participants' needs.
The ability to raise performance through competent coaching, to create people who are fully engaged and who routinely act as problem solvers is a valuable skill. It will stand you in good stead throughout your management career.
Building Team Relationships
In a poll at The Center for Creative Leadership (NC, USA) an overwhelming 82% of those polled rated the ability to build relationships as the most important competency for success as a leader.
A more detailed look at Jung's Theory of Personality gets put to practical use for the best ways to assess the team strengths, weaknesses, interactions & relationships.
The module is designed for senior management level and the output is that managers design and create their own team building sessions for continuous, internal use.
Unlocking Team Potential and Value From Psychometrics
Companies have often invested in an array of different psychometric reports at different times – such as MBTI, Belbin, Kiersey, Disc etc. Often, little is done with them after the initial individual interest. You can get more value from the reports by making sure everyone sees how the various reports dovetail together. People then get an understanding of exactly how to put them to use, to get the very best out of themselves and their fellow team members. And it can even be fun. The aim of this module is to show you how to 'map across' the varying reports, consolidate them, get a current team profile and examine all the strategies that will make the team more effective by their use.
The module is appropriate for all levels.
